Matt, you refuse total depravity and everything that is correlated to
it. Here is a perfect example. You cannot reason with the unbeliever.
He is blind. He cannot see God for who He truly is because, indeed,
he is not looking. He seeking to satisfy self. He is seeking to
interpet what is via reason. He has not the Spirit and therefore
cannot seek after, let alone comprehend, who God is.
In Rom 1 Paul establishes the fact that because man is created in the
image of God, he does have within him the factness of being a creature,
there being a Creator, that he is a sinner, and that there is a
judgment to come. But there is no spiritual means of appreciation.
Though all this is there, and all of this will condemn him before God,
yet he is blind both because of sin he is "in the darkness and walks in
the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness
has blinded his eyes"
and because "the god of this world has blinded the minds of the
unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the gospel of the
glory of Christ, who is the image of God."
It is vain to argue with the unbelieving expecting your rational and
empirical theistic evidences are going to switch some sort of light
bulb on in his inner spiritual self and have him go, "Ahhh! Now I see
it." This can only be achieved via the ministry of the Spirit.
