Jhn 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so
must the Son of man be lifted up:
Jhn 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
eternal life.
Jhn 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten
Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
everlasting life.
Jhn 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world;
but that the world through him might be saved.
Jhn 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that
believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the
name of the only begotten Son of God.

Yeshua said the Father intends for all men to be saved so He granted
all men that grace through His promise of everlasting life to all who
believe and accept. Salvation comes from the Father to all mankind.

For it is by grace you have been saved through the faith and this not
of you, of God the gift.

What does "this" refer back to? What does God give?
"This" is singular. It can refer only to one thing. It has to be
grace or faith, not both. We know that grace has to be a gift of God.
He took away our salvation because of Adam's sin (and ours) so the only
way we can get it back is through God's grace. On the other hand,
faith, being a gift from God, brings with it complicating factors. If
God punishes for lack of faith, then God goes against His just nature.
God punishes sin. If one has faith, he would not sin. If God
selectively gives faith, then He would be unjust to punish those who He
did not give faith. Yeshua said also , "If you had faith the size of a
mustard seed...", so we know that faith is not given to all.
So, "this" must refer back to "grace". That stated, what is John 3:16
saying?
God so loved everyone that He was gracious to provide the Way to return
to be with Him forever. Everyone is able to partake of that free
gracious gift from God.
We do not deserve it. No one can boast that by their deeds they could
have passed the test given to Adam and Eve. We are all sinners and
cannot get past that angel with the flaming sword on our own merit.
None of us is sinless as Adam was before the fall. Being repentant
doesn't make it. I'm sure Adam was repentant after he sinned. But he
lived on earth and then died. If he believed that God would send the
Promised Seed, he then returned to Paradise.
He, like us, must believe that the Father loved us, "so loved the
world" that He....through His graciousness, wanted us to come back to
be with Him. He loved us so much, He was willing to come and die for
us.
It is necessary to believe in the love of the Father.
If Adam and Eve believed that God is Love, they could not have
disobeyed Him. They believed Satan when He said God doesn't love you
if He withholds something from you. Or put another way, God's rules
cannot be gifts of love. (1 John 5:3)
God shows how much He loves us through Yeshua. We have to recognize
our loving Father through Him. So that when we return to Paradise we
would not, even though we still have free choice, choose to question
the love of God's word.
God could have made man a robot without free choice, but then love
would have no meaning. And man's worship of YHVH is not truly,
worship.
