A false alternative? Here's a fact: If you take any integer n,
then you can find two different positive integers a and b such
that n^a - n^b is a multiple of 10. Suppose you don't believe
this fact. To set out to disprove me, you try a bunch of examples.
You let n=2, and discover that 2^5-2 = 30. Then you try
n=3 and discover 3^6 - 3^2 = 720. You keep trying examples.
You have your computer generate a zillion examples. Eventually
you start to be convinced that this fact must be true, because
you can't find a single counter-example.
Were you "enabled" to believe the fact? I don't think so,
since there has been no change in your abilities over the
course of the experiment. You were just as able yesterday
of believing the fact as you are today.
Were you "forced" to believe the fact? Only if somehow
inanimate numbers and computers have some hold over your
will.
I'd say, rather, that you were _convinced_ of the truth.
